「The plant that pretends to be ill」

Mining moths lay larvae into the leaves,
and the caterpillars then munch through the leaf surface,
leaving a white trail of damage behind.
"The similarity of the variegation patterns
with the criss-cross munching traces of the larvae
led to the idea that maybe they deter the mining moth
from laying its eggs," says Liede-Schumann.
To test the idea, the researchers used white correction fluid
to mimic the appearance of variegation on hundreds of healthy leaves.
After three months, they then counted the number of leaves
affected by the mining moth caterpillars,
comparing green leaves, variegated leaves and
those painted white to appear variegated.

"The results were the same," says Liede-Schumann.
"Visibly variegated leaves were significantly less frequently
damaged by mining moth larvae than plain green ones."
While moths infested almost 8% of green leaves,
they infested 1.6% of variegated ones
and just 0.4% of those painted to look like they were variegated.
"I was quite surprised," says Liede-Schumann.
She believes that the plant essentially fakes being ill,
producing variegated leaves that mimic those
that have already been damaged by mining moth larvae.
That deters the moths from laying any further larvae on the leaves,
as the insects assume the previous caterpillars have already eaten
most of the leaves' nutrients.
"The fact that there are both plain green and variegated leaves
in the population indicates to me that both are useful
in the long-term success of the species," says Liede-Schumann.
The reduction in a variegated leaf's ability to photosynthesise
is likely to be more than offset by the benefits of not being eaten,
the researchers believe,
suggesting that variegation survives in wild plants
because it confers a selective advantage.

A plant that pretends to be ill has been found
growing in the rainforests of Ecuador.

The plants feigns sickness to stop it being attacked by insect pests
known as mining moths, which would otherwise eat its healthy leaves.
It is the first known example of a plant that mimics being ill,
and could also explain a common pattern
seen on plant leaves known as variegation.
The discovery is published in the journal Evolutionary Ecology.
Variegation is familiar to gardeners and affects many species of plant.
Variegated plants have different coloured patterns on the leaf surface,
produced by a variety of causes.
One of the most common is when cells in the leaf lose chlorophyll
and their ability to photosynthesise, appearing white.
In theory, plants with variegated leaves should be at a disadvantage,
because of this restricted ability to photosynthesise.
But a chance discovery by a team of botanists suggests
this may not be true after all.
Instead, some variegated plants may be mimicking illness
to avoid being eaten, putting themselves at an advantage.
Sigrid Liede-Schumann and colleagues Ulf Soltau and Stefan Dotterl
of the University of Bayreuth in Germany were studying understory plants
in the forest of southern Ecuador,
when they noticed that the plain green leaves of a plant
known as Caladium steudneriifolium were far more frequently damaged
by mining moths than those of variegated leaves of the same species nearby.

「The secrets of ant sleep revealed」

-----

Queen dreams

The queens fell asleep at far more regular intervals than their subjects.
In fact, the queens even synchronised their naps,
with all three queens dozing together.
"It's very cosy," says Cassill.
"The synchrony of queens occurs because, like hound dogs,
they pile atop each other when they sleep. When awake, they separate."
On average, each queen would fall asleep 90 times a day,
sleeping for just over 6 minutes at a time.
That equates to over nine hours of sleep each day.
Queens also slept in two distinct ways.

Sometime they would just doze,
with their antennae half raised and their mouths agape.
When dozing, the queens could be easily roused
by one another or by their workforce.
But often the queens would fall into much deeper sleep,
with their antennae retracted and mouths closed.
Intriguingly, Cassill's team gathered evidence suggesting
that the queen ants dream when sleeping deeply.
Frequently, the queens would quiver their folded antennae when sleeping deeply.
This "rapid antennal movement (RAM) might be an analog to the rapid eye movement
in vertebrates," the researchers write in the Journal of Insect Behavior.

Disposable workers

The function of sleep is still unknown.
But for ants, the lack of rest for the workers seems to help ensure
the queens get to live a peaceful existence.
"Workers are a disposable caste whose job is
to buffer the queen and her royal offspring from agents of death
like exposure, starvation and predators.
It is the workers who engage in the high risk behaviour,
thus the queen lives a long life."
"Amazingly, queens can live six years before they die of old age.
Whereas workers live six months to a year and then die of old age
or some accident during foraging," says Cassill.
The queens of other ant species can live even longer,
reaching up to 45 years.

Journal of Insect Behavior

Queen ants dozily dream, while worker ants are forced to get by taking power naps, the first study of the sleeping habits of ants has revealed.

Queen fire ants fall into relatively long,
deep sleeps and kip for an average of nine hours every day.
By contrast, workers sleep just half as much
and get to rest by taking hundreds of short power naps.
This division of rest may help explain why queens live for years,
while worker ants typically only live for months.
It also ensures that enough worker ants are awake at any one time
to protect and serve the colony.
Deby Cassill of the University of South Florida in St Petersburg, US
teamed with colleagues Skye Brown and Devon Swick of the same university,
and George Yanev of the University of Texas in Arlington, US
to study the sleeping patterns of the fire ant Solenopsis invicta.
"I decided to see just how lazy the queens really were," says Cassill.
She and her colleagues raised a colony of fire ants in their laboratory,
and created an artificial chamber containing three queens, 30 workers
and 30 large larvae. They placed a glass cover over the top of the chamber,
allowing the ants to be continuously filmed from above.
Because fire ants generally live underground,
the researchers expected that their sleep patterns would not be determined
by light and dark cycles. And that is what they found.
Workers fell asleep at irregular intervals, and not at the same time.
But the sheer number of incredibly short naps they took was striking.
On average, a single worker ant would take 250 naps each day,
with each one lasting just over a minute.
That equates to 4 hours and 48 minutes of sleep a day.
That also meant that 80 per cent of the workforce was awake and active
at any one time.
"The large number and short naps by workers means
that jobs in the nest never go unattended," says Cassill.
"There is always a worker available when the need arises.
When work is slow, workers sleep more."
Equally striking was the contrast between the sleeping habits
of the workers and of the queens they served.

WWF(世界自然保護基金)エンヴァイロメント・ニュース

"Illegal clearing behind human and tiger deaths in Sumatra"

Jambi Province is the site of the only two “global priority” tiger conservation landscapes in Sumatra, as identified by a group of leading tiger scientists in 2005.
There are estimated to be fewer than 400 Sumatran tigers left in the wild.

Didy Wurjanto, the head of the official Jambi nature conservancy agency,
BKSDA, said his team has increased its patrols following the killings.
He is also working with local officials to halt the rampant conversion
of forests by illegal loggers and palm oil plantations,
which is mostly done by people from outside Jambi.

“The shocking news that six people have been killed in less than one month
is an extremely sad illustration of how bad the situation has become in Jambi,” Wurjanto said.
“It’s a signal that we need to get serious about protecting natural forest
and giving tigers their space, and ensure local governments have sustainable economic development policies in place that include long-term protections
for our natural resources.”

WWF is working with officials and communities in both provinces on ways
to reduce the conflict and has deployed field staff to the site of the Riau killings to investigate the incidents.
